Account Types On Spires

All new users have an individual account created for them on Spires. There is then the option to convert this into a Billpayer/Student account.

It is important for tutors to understand our account types and how they effect their interaction with users.

  • Individual (Standard) Account: Best account type if there is 1 user, who is both attending classes and managing their own payments (adding cards, paying for classes etc)

  • Billpayer/Student Account: Best account type if there are 2 of more users involved.

    • At least one student who is attending classes

    • One billpayer who is managing payments for 1 or more students.

Permissions Of Account Types

For a detailed guide on how users change their account type - please see our student guide article HERE. Please signpost this to any users who you feel would benefit from this.

What Happens When A User Converts To A Billpayer/Student Account Type?

Users can choose to convert their account type at any time. This may be at the start of a new placement or mid way through working with a tutor.

The only difference tutors will notice, is that their messaging tab with that user will change.

You will now have two separate messaging threads:

  • One between you and the student (which the billpayer will have read only access to)

  • One between you and the billpayer (which the student will not be able to see/read)

These features are only available to users who have selected to change their account type.

Please note: Only the account holders can opt into using this feature. Tutors cannot change the account types on their students behalf. For any users who continue to use our standard (individual) account type, nothing will change on their messaging tab.
