Why is my card being declined?

This is a sign that your billing address has been entered incorrectly.

Like many online merchants and services, Spires is now running an automated check on your billing address to see if it matches the one on file at your bank. This is done in the interest of fraud and safety, it is also standard practice.

If your card was previously accepted but has been rejected, or you cannot add your card to Spires because the address is incorrect, then read on to find out more about troubleshooting this.

How to re-enter your address

Simply go to the payments page and click the edit payment card text as below:

You will then be able to re-enter your card details and billing address as the form below:

Troubleshooting

Some people may be convinced that they have entered their details correctly, but their card is still being declined. We have to make it clear that there are no issues with the platform and the problem comes from them making a mistake when entering their address.

The most common causes are:

  • Incorrect spelling of streets

  • Mistyped postcodes

  • In cases where the address is for a flat in the UK, this has to be written in the following format: Flat 5, Cecil court, 138 Harwood Road, postcode.
