What is a background check?

A background check is a check of a tutor's criminal record. All tutors who want to work with students who are under 18 must provide them before they can begin speaking to potential students. Spires checks these before allowing the tutors access to the students.

In the UK, the background check takes the form of an Enhanced DBS. Many other countries use a police check, and Australia uses a special system called the Working with Children check.

We check all of them and do not allow tutors access to Spires if we see anything concerning on them.

Can I see the background checks?

In short no, we do not release them. You can ask tutors for them, however, they do not have to show them to you. Background checks contain a lot of personal information, like addresses. This means they are not suitable to be shared.
